Pace

Pace Between Cities

Fall 2016      Course Name: Major Studio 1      Individual Work      Tool: Adobe Illustrator & After Effects

Concept: I'm studying the pace of life in different cities because I want to find out what the indicators are in order to design a short animation that can let users feel the difference, and then encourage a discussion about what their opinions are towards the different pace of life.

Research:

A. What is pace of life?

“The pace of life is the flow or movement of time that people experience. It is characterized by rhythms, by se- quences, and by synchronizes. But first and foremost, the pace of life is a matter of tempo.”

--Robert N. Levine

B. Indicators of pace of life?

1) Average walking speed in downtown locations

2) The speed with which postal clerks completed a simple request (work speed)

3)The accuracy of public clocks

--Robert N. Levine

C. Survey results about walking speed in different years?

In 1976, Bornstein and Bornstein released a study in which they observed and recorded the average walking speed of pedestrians across a sample of 15 cities and towns in 6 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America.

In 1994, Robert Levine re- leased a study in which he observed and recorded the average walking speed of pedestrians across a sample of 31 cities in the world.

In 2006, Prof Richard Wisman has announced the results of an international study in collaboration with the British Council to measure the speed of life 32 cities.

D. Three typical cities' average walking speed(Average time taken in secs to walk 60ft)

New York: 12.03 in 1994   12.00 in 2006

Paris: 12.34 in 1994      12.65 in 2006

Singapore: 14.75 in 1994    10.55 in 2006

Audience Discussion:
"These three people all come to different cities? Or only one of them is changing cities?"
"Why using the switcher to indicate the change of city?"
"I agree with your opinion. If our pace of life become too fast, it will give our body potential dangers."
"I think that we actually have no choice when coming to a new city. We must adapt ourselves to the new place."
"I don’t even know that Singapore is so fast, faster than New York!"
Even though we sometimes know that the city is too fast or slow for us, it’s still not easy to change a city because we have too many other issues to be considered.
"Every time when I come back to my home town, I feel exactly the same way as the person who starts to walk in Paris in the movie."
"I really like that clock! It seems to reveal how the time is gone while we are walking."
"Having a fast pace of life is actually not a bad thing. It’s just the way in which we choose to live."
